Guy has finished 10 of the past 11 seasons ranked between 20 and 34

and this season he's currently ranked 23, at 34.5 years old.

he has 8 titles to his name, including titles on clay, grass and hardcourt

only a single QF appearance at the majors though (Wimbledon 2012)

classic example of nazi efficiency. he can take care of business against guys worse than him, but doesnt have the guns to get to the next level.

ran some #'s

career 407-171 (70.4%) vs guys ranked worse than him

141-239 (37.1%) vs guys ranked better than him

9-54 (15.3%) vs. top 5

23-92 (20%) vs. top 10

****

AT GRAND SLAMS:

52-17 (75.4%) vs. guys ranked worse

12-37 (24.5%) vs. guys ranked better

1-10 (9.1%) vs. top 5

3-21 (12.5%) vs. top 10

***

AT MASTERS

25-56 (30.8%) vs. guys better than him

54-25 (68.4%) vs. guys worse than him

4-22 (15.4%) vs. top 5

4-34 (10.5%) vs top 10

***

looks like he underperforms vs top 5 and top 10 players at bigger events as opposed to smaller events. would need to see an overall data set of all players to know how in line that is -- better players are likely to perform better at bigger events bc bo5 and they care more.

good analysis.

also, interestingly, of his 8 titles 5 were won in Germany and 2 in Austria -- the lone outlier was in NZ

i wonder to what extent "home" court helps players

would be a cool data project. we should open up a tennis think tank and figure out how to get grants to study this shit.

is there home field advantage, or are guys in the 5-25 who dont need to play so many shit 250's more likely to play shit 250 tourneys closer to their hometowns where they may be among the top seeds?

btw i love the fact that Court is still 1 major ahead of Serena

if Serena never wins any more majors you can always point to Court as being the GOAT over Serena bc she has 1 more major.

of course people will always fire back some argument that you have to take other factors into consideration, at which point you can easily make the case for Graf at 22 majors lol

Court provides the perfect bait
